TCYP Member Spotlight – Allison Obermier

What is your day job?

I am a general dentist.

How long have you lived in the Grand Traverse area?

My fiancé and I just moved to the area this past summer. We both grew up about an hour south of Traverse City but spent the last few years living out of state while I finished school.

What is your favorite aspect of living/working in the Traverse City area?

I love being close to so many beautiful lakes and natural spaces. It’s great to be able to do things like go to the beach or go on a fun hike on a whim!

What do you do for fun?

I enjoy hiking, paddle boarding, kayaking, playing volleyball and cooking. I also play the alto saxophone, and I recently joined a community band which has been really fun.

How do you get involved in the community?

Being new to the area, I’m still figuring that out! However, joining beach volleyball and the community band at NMC has been a great way to meet people that share my hobbies.

What is your favorite local business (restaurant, shop, service, etc.) and why?

So far, my favorite restaurant is The Dojo. I love sushi and they have some really unique rolls. I’m excited to continue trying new restaurants and exploring more local businesses as I get to know the area.

What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?

Probably my current job as a dentist. We see lots of interesting things every day!

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

Despite going to the University of Michigan for my undergrad, I actually went to Ohio State for dental school! I was in the Michigan Marching Band and have many fond memories of life in Ann Arbor so I will always be a Michigan fan (go blue!).

What is something you learned in the last week?

I learned that the lighter was invented before the match!

How can other TCYP members support you (personally or professionally)?

If there are cool events or things to do in the area, let me know! I’m always looking for ways to meet more people and explore the area.
