TCYP Member Spotlight – Sam Connell

What is your day job?

I am the Director of Sales and Promotions, Assistant General Manager for the Traverse City Pit Spitters.

How long have you lived in the Grand Traverse area?

I have lived here for about three and a half years.

What is your favorite thing about living/working in the Traverse City area?

I love the community and the way that our community members support each other. The connections that I have been able to make here have been amazing and have helped me continue to get more involved.

What do you do for fun?

I am a huge fan of craft beer, so my wife and I are always checking out different breweries in the area. Besides that, I love spending time with my wife and our son and just enjoying the beauty that Northern Michigan offers!

How do you get involved in the community?

I am a member of the TCYP Programming Committee, I recently graduated from Leadership Grand Traverse, and I am also working with 4Front Credit Union’s 4Front Foundation on their scholarship committee.

What is your favorite local business (restaurant, shop, service, etc.) and why?

I love The Filling Station. On top of having incredibly delicious pizza and beer, their entire staff is so kind and accommodating every time we go there. When they found out my wife was pregnant they even gave us a “Filling Station Half Pint” shirt for our son which was going above and beyond!

What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?

Throughout high school and college I was a referee for elementary and middle school basketball. The talent level wasn’t necessarily the best, but it was a lot of fun! There is nothing more entertaining that fifth graders playing basketball on a Saturday morning.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

I am a two-time slam dunk contest champion at my high school.

What is something you learned in the last week?

I was able to go on a tour of Great Lakes Chips last week and I learned their entire production process!

How can other TCYP members support you (personally or professionally)?

Personally, just reach out and connect! I love to connect with other TCYP members and make new friends. Professionally, come out to a Pit Spitters game and see the experience firsthand! We offer the best entertainment experience in Northern Michigan and I want everyone to be able to experience it!
