What is your day job?
I’m the Co-Owner of Bushell’s Kitchen + Cocktails, an upscale-casual restaurant in downtown Traverse City. Hospitality is what I know best—I’m involved in everything from concept and culture to operations and guest experience, making sure every detail aligns with the kind of place we’re proud to bring to the community.
How long have you lived in the Grand Traverse area?
I’ve lived in Traverse City for about 10 years. I was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, and moving north marked a major turning point in my life—both personally and professionally.
What is your favorite aspect of living/working in the Traverse City area?
The best part of living here is how close we are to the water and beaches. There’s something grounding about being surrounded by nature, especially in a place that still values community and local connection.
What do you do for fun?
I work a lot, but outside of that I’m a dad to a six-year-old boy and a two-year-old girl. Most of my free time revolves around them, and honestly, they’re my greatest source of joy and motivation. They keep life fun, busy, and meaningful.
How do you get involved in the community?
Community involvement is important to me. I support and sponsor local initiatives and events, including the National Cherry Festival, and I regularly attend Coffee & Connections through Traverse Connect. I believe strong businesses are built by investing back into the community that supports them.
What is your favorite local business (restaurant, shop, service, etc.) and why?
One of my favorites is Mundos 305, Specifically the downtown location. It’s within walking distance of Bushell’s, and there’s nothing better than a great midday coffee from a local spot that does it right.
What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?
Hospitality itself might take that title. After more than 10 years in the industry and now as a restaurant owner, I’ve truly done it all—the exciting wins, the stressful moments, and yes, even the really messy parts. It’s taught me resilience, humility, and how to stay grounded no matter what the day throws at you.
Tell us something that might surprise us about you.
I’ve been engaged to my fiancé, Kelci, for eight years. Practically married at this point—but building a business and a life together has been its own journey.
What is something you learned in the last week?
I was reminded that progress doesn’t always come from big moves. Sometimes it’s just about showing up consistently, even when things are challenging.
How can other TCYP members support you (personally or professionally)?
The best support is simply coming in to dine at Bushell’s and experiencing the hospitality we’re working hard to deliver. We’re still young—just two years in—and we’re grateful for every opportunity to earn the community’s support as we continue to grow.
